CE Marking for Steel and Aluminium Balustrades
At Balustradedesign, all of our aluminium and stainless steel balustrade systems are CE marked in accordance with the European standard EN 1090-1:2009 + A1:2011. This certification applies to structural components in steel and aluminium, and guarantees that our products meet consistent performance and manufacturing standards across the EU.
All of our products are manufactured at our own production facility in Ängelholm, Sweden, where we maintain full control over every stage of the process.
What is CE Marking?
CE stands for Conformité Européenne, and the CE mark indicates that a product complies with EU legislation in areas such as health, safety and environmental protection. For construction products, CE marking shows that the product’s performance has been assessed according to harmonised European standards.
It also means that the product can be legally sold and used throughout the EU and EEA. For customers, CE marking provides an important basis for comparison, transparency and quality assurance.
What Does CE Marking Mean for Our Products?
CE marking confirms that the product complies with the relevant European standard – in this case, EN 1090-1, which applies to load-bearing steel and aluminium components.
It is important to note that CE marking is not an approval or a guarantee that the product meets national building codes in your country. Rather, it ensures that the product’s performance has been declared in a consistent and standardised way. You as the customer can then evaluate whether the product is suitable for your specific project.
Requirements for CE Marking
In order to be CE marked under EN 1090-1, a product must:
- Comply with relevant EU directives and harmonised standards
- Be accompanied by a Declaration of Performance (DoP) that outlines the product’s key properties
- Be appropriately labelled with the CE mark – either on the product itself, the packaging or in accompanying documentation
Importantly, CE marking does not mean the product has been approved by a government agency. The manufacturer is responsible for declaring and verifying that all criteria are met.
Why Are Some Balustrades on the Market Not CE Marked?
CE marking for balustrades is voluntary and not legally required for all railing systems intended for fall protection or safety use.
At Balustradedesign, we have chosen to certify our aluminium and steel systems under EN 1090-1 to ensure maximum transparency in our manufacturing process and to give our customers access to clear, reliable performance data.
In addition to our internal quality control, our production process is continuously audited by an external accredited body – a step we take to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety and compliance. This is not a legal requirement, but a decision we have made to demonstrate our long-term commitment to safe and responsible construction.
