CE marked quality and safety

At Balustradedesign, safety is integral to every product we offer. ST Prime is CE marked in accordance with EN 1090-1, the European standard for structural safety and performance. This ensures the balustrade meets stringent requirements for load-bearing capacity, manufacturing control and long-term durability.

We also conduct our own internal tests – such as impact tests – to guarantee that every system performs as expected, regardless of location or weather exposure. Performance declarations (DoP) are available under technical documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions – Stainless steel glass balustrades

  • Does the balustrade come with everything I need?

Yes – every order includes all posts, panels, screws, fixings, mounting templates and a personalised video tutorial. No extra parts required.

  • Can I use this balustrade around a patio or garden deck?

Yes – the ST Prime stainless steel railing system is ideal for patios, roof terraces and garden decking. Its corrosion resistance and open design make it perfect for outdoor use.

  • Is the glass strong enough for balconies and terraces?

Absolutely. ST Prime includes laminated safety glass as standard. You can also choose laminated and tempered glass for extra strength where needed.

  • What’s the difference between AISI 304 and AISI 316L?

AISI 304 is ideal for indoor use. AISI 316L contains molybdenum, which increases corrosion resistance, making it suitable for outdoor and coastal locations.

  • How do I maintain stainless steel outdoors?

Rinse with fresh water regularly, especially in coastal or urban areas. Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent – no painting or oiling is needed.

  • Can I install the stainlees steel balustrade myself?

Yes! ST Prime is delivered in a pre-assembled kit with all fixings, instructions and a custom video guide tailored to your design.

  • What is the legal balustrade height in the UK?

For domestic use, balustrades must be at least 900 mm high on stairs and landings, and 1100 mm on balconies and terraces – as outlined in BS 6180.

  • Is St Prime suitable for coastal or windy locations?

Yes – it’s designed with AISI 316L acid-resistant stainless steel for high-exposure use and performs exceptionally well in salt air and harsh climates.

CE-Marked Posts

The posts have been tested for top-down and lateral attachment to wooden base, and can withstand loads of 0.5-1.0 kN/m.

Round 42 mm

Round stainless steel posts with a diameter of 42 mm. For indoor use: AISI 304; for outdoor use: AISI 316.

Stainless Steel AISI 304/316

For indoor balustrades, AISI 304 stainless steel is used. For outdoor installation, AISI 316 (acid-resistant stainless steel) is recommended for maximum durability.

Steel thickness 2 mm

Stainless Steel Handrail

Round handrail in stainless steel (42 mm), using AISI 304 for indoor and AISI 316 for outdoor use. Supplied with fittings for any corners. Available in lengths up to 4.4 m; longer handrails are delivered in sections with sleek pipe connectors.

Wooden Handrail

Round handrail (43 mm) available in untreated light oak or jatoba – a hardwood similar in appearance and properties to teak.

Corners

For corners, the wooden handrail should be manually bent to fit precisely. For stainless steel handrails with angles over 90 degrees, corner fittings are included.

8.76 mm Laminated Glass

Composed of two 4 mm glass panes with a plastic interlayer. If the glass breaks, the interlayer keeps it intact. Delivered with ground and polished edges.

8.76 mm Toughened Laminated Glass

Same structure as standard laminated glass, but with toughened (tempered) glass panes for enhanced impact resistance. Recommended in areas subject to repeated external pressure. Delivered with ground and polished edges.

Glass Options (colour)

Choose from clear glass or coloured interlayers in grey or opal (frosted) finish between the panes.

Indoor Clamps

For indoor balustrades, clamps are made of zinc with a stainless steel finish.

Outdoor Clamps

For outdoor use, the clamps are manufactured from acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316), ensuring long-term corrosion resistance.

Square or Rounded

You can choose between square or rounded clamp shapes when designing your balustrade.

Symmetrical Sections

Enter the outer dimensions of the installation area into our design tool. We’ll adjust the section lengths so that each side has symmetrical sections, tailored to your measurements – not the other way around.

Customisable Railing Height

Choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm (measured from the ground to the top of the handrail) in our configurator.

Millimetre Perfect

Please enter all dimensions in millimetres. We manufacture each balustrade to fit perfectly, down to the millimetre.

Adaptation For Pitched Roofs

It’s possible to adapt the glass with cut-off corners to fit the slope of a pitched roof, based on your measurements.

Top-down Attachment

Mounted by screwing four fasteners directly into the floor surface.

Lateral Attachment

Side-mounted using rail brackets for enhanced stability and minimal impact on floor space. Post brackets are installed flush against the vertical mounting surface.

Handrails With or Without Wall Attachment

If the balustrade begins at a wall, you can choose to attach the handrail to it for added stability.

Screw for Wood Attachment Mounted on Top

Includes screws for wooden substrates, made of hardened steel with Corrseal coating for outdoor use. Features milling grooves along the shaft and tip to reduce torque and prevent splitting in hard woods.

Screw for Wood Attachment Externally Mounted

If you choose attachment to a concrete substrate, screws are included for this purpose. The screw is made of hardened steel with Corrseal treatment for outdoor environments – Corrosivity class C4. Approved for basic materials: Cracked concrete – Uncracked concrete – Hole-covered decks. Also suitable for: Solid brick – Hollow brick – Solid mexite brick – Natural stone.

Everything is Included with Your Order

Your delivery includes all components required for installation – posts, glass, handrails, fixings, drill bits and special tools. All you need is a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and a spirit level.

Assembly Videos and Instructions

Our video guides are tailored to your specific order – not generic instructions. You’ll receive step-by-step guidance matched to your chosen design and components.

Stainless Steel Parts

Although stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, it still requires cleaning 1–3 times per year. In coastal areas, more frequent maintenance may be necessary. Use a soft cloth with warm water and mild detergent.

Wooden Handrail

For outdoor installations, clean and lightly sand the handrail before treating it with a protective product such as wood oil. For indoor use, cleaning and light sanding is usually sufficient – oiling is optional.

Glass

Clean glass surfaces with a soft cloth and window/mirror cleaner. For stubborn marks, use rubbing alcohol followed by glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive products.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
