Stainless Steel Bar Balustrade for Balconies, Patios & Stairs

Looking for a durable and elegant stainless steel railing system? St Flow (horizontal bars) and St Breeze (vertical bars) offer two distinct styles – both built to provide safety, strength and a contemporary look.

Crafted from high-grade stainless steel and CE marked, these balustrades are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Delivered as a made-to-measure kit, they are ideal for balconies, staircases, patios and more.

Choose between the open visual lines of horizontal bars or the timeless appeal of vertical balusters – and customise every detail to match your project.

Where to use a stainless steel bar balustrade?

St Flow and St Breeze work in a wide range of environments – from private homes to commercial settings. Their premium stainless steel construction makes them suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

  • Balcony bar balustrade – maximise safety without blocking the view
  • Staircase railing – vertical or horizontal styles for any configuration
  • Decking or patio railing – weatherproof and visually striking
  • Interior feature railing – elegant protection around mezzanines or landings

Horizontal bars (St Flow) are best suited for ground-level installations, while vertical bars (St Breeze) offer a climb-safe solution for elevated areas.

How to install a stainless steel bar balustrade

Your railing kit includes everything you need: posts, bars, fasteners, tools and instructions tailored to your design. All posts are top-mounted, and we provide a printed template for accurate spacing.

  1. Measure and mark your post positions
  2. Drill and secure the posts to the surface
  3. Insert and fasten the bars and handrail
  4. Perform a final alignment check for stability

Watch our step-by-step video guides for installation support. No welding or specialised tools are needed – just standard hand tools and a stable working surface.

Stainless steel – strong, sleek, but not maintenance-free

Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, but not immune – especially in coastal or damp environments. Regular maintenance will help preserve the appearance and prevent surface rust.

  • Clean with water and mild detergent
  • Wipe down any salt or grime, particularly if near the sea
  • Follow our care guide for stainless steel railings

Looking for something with minimal upkeep? Consider Alu Modern or Alu Classic as maintenance-free alternatives.

CE Marked Stainless Steel Balustrade

Both St Flow and St Breeze are CE marked under EN 1090-1:2009 + A1:2011, certifying structural integrity and production quality. Our manufacturing process is externally audited and includes internal impact testing to ensure long-term safety and compliance.

Technical information

Technical details

CE-marked posts

The posts have been tested for both top-mounted and side-mounted installation on wooden substrates and can withstand loads of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.

Round 42 mm

Round stainless steel posts with a diameter of 42 mm. AISI 304 is used for indoor installations, and AISI 316 for outdoor use.

Stainless steel AISI 304/316

For indoor use, we use stainless steel grade AISI 304 for the posts. For outdoor settings, AISI 316 is used due to its acid-resistant properties and high corrosion resistance.

Steel thickness 2 mm

Round profiles Ø 12 mm

Horizontal bars in round stainless steel profile, AISI 316, with a diameter of 12 mm. Material thickness: 1.5 mm.

Round profiles Ø 12 mm

Round vertical bars in acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316), 12 mm in diameter.

Stainless steel handrail

Round stainless steel handrail (Ø 42 mm). AISI 304 for indoor use and AISI 316 for outdoor environments. Corner fittings are included. Handrails are supplied in lengths up to 4.4 m. Longer lengths are delivered in sections joined by elegant pipe connectors.

Wooden handrail

Round handrail (Ø 43 mm) available in untreated light oak or jatoba – a dense hardwood with characteristics similar to teak.

Corners

For wooden handrails, corners must be manually mitred to ensure a precise fit. For stainless steel handrails at angles exceeding 90°, dedicated corner fittings are included.

Symmetrical sections

When entering your measurements into our online configurator, always provide the external dimensions of the installation area. The system will then automatically adjust each section so that all sides are symmetrical. This ensures your railing is tailored to your space – not the other way around.

Customisable railing height

You can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm, measured from the ground to the top of the handrail.

Millimetre perfect

When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

Top-down attachment

Mounted by fixing the base plate to the floor using four screws.

Lateral attachment

Side mounting is performed using rail brackets. This method is slightly more stable and does not take up floor space. The brackets sit flush against the mounting surface.

Screw for wood attachment

If your railing is to be attached to a wooden surface, we include hardened steel screws that are surface-treated with CorrSeal for outdoor durability (corrosivity class C4). These screws feature milling grooves along the shaft and tip, reducing insertion torque and minimising cracking in dense wood.

Screw for concrete attachment

If mounting on concrete, we provide hardened steel screws with CorrSeal surface treatment for outdoor use (C4 class). They are approved for cracked and uncracked concrete and perforated slabs. Also suitable for: solid brick, hollow brick, solid mexite brick, and natural stone. If mounting into any material other than wood or concrete, we recommend consulting your local hardware supplier for suitable fixings.

Everything is included with your order

Your delivery contains everything you need: posts, bars, handrails, screws, drill bits and any special tools required. You’ll only need a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

Assembly videos and instructions

We provide tailored assembly videos and instructions that are specific to your order – not generic guides. These resources walk you through every step of the installation process.

Stainless steel parts

Stainless steel requires periodic maintenance. Clean and treat the steel 1–3 times a year using a soft cloth, lukewarm water and mild detergent. In coastal environments, more frequent maintenance may be needed due to salt exposure.

Wooden handrail

For outdoor installations, clean and lightly sand the surface. Treat the wood with oil or a suitable protective product based on local weather conditions. For indoor use, regular cleaning and occasional sanding are sufficient. Applying oil is optional.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
