CE-Marked and Built to Last
Just like our railings, the Alu Retro Gate is manufactured in our certified facility in Sweden and CE-marked according to EN 1090-1. This guarantees compliance with European safety standards, including structural integrity and weather durability.
Why Choose an Alu Retro Aluminium Gate?
Classic wrought iron look in lightweight aluminium
Custom-made for your dimensions and preferences
Wide colour range via RAL palette
Weatherproof and rust-free – ideal for the British climate
The posts are CE-marked and tested for installation both on top of and to the face of wooden surfaces. They meet load requirements of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.
Powder-Coated Finish
Alu Retro posts are available in three standard powder-coated colours: Textured Grey, Textured Black, and Textured White. You can also choose any custom RAL colour to match your project.
50×50 mm Square Design
The posts and top rails are made from aluminium with a sleek square profile, measuring 50×50 mm.
Anodised Surface – 20 µm Coating
All aluminium profiles are anodised with a 20-micron surface treatment – the same corrosion-resistant technique used on sailboat masts.
Material Thickness – 2.5 mm
Each aluminium post is manufactured with a sturdy 2.5 mm wall thickness for long-term durability.
Square Intermediate Bar
Powder-coated aluminium bar, square 25×25 mm, with 2 mm wall thickness.
Rectangular Bars
Powder-coated aluminium bar, rectangular 15×25 mm, with 1.8 mm wall thickness.
Standard Intermediate Bar
Without top rail: Intermediate bars are placed 75 mm centre-to-centre from the outer edge.
With top rail: Bars are spaced 120 mm centre-to-centre from the outer edge.
Higher Intermediate Bar
With top rail: Bars extend higher and are placed directly at the outer edge. Both versions comply with building regulations.
50×50 mm Square Profile
Aluminium top rails and posts are square, measuring 50×50 mm.
Anodised Surface – 20 µm Coating
Our aluminium profiles are anodised with a 20-micron finish – the same method used on yacht masts for superior weather resistance.
Wooden Top Rail
Profiled top rail in untreated light oak or jatoba – a dense hardwood with similar appearance and durability to teak.
Angle Adjustment
For any corners in the railing, adjust the wooden top rail manually to ensure a precise fit. Both wood and aluminium can be cut using a standard mitre saw. When using an aluminium top rail and the corner is 90 degrees, no cutting is required.
Left or Right-Hinged?
The gate opens inwards, so you’ll need to specify hinge placement. While standing on your surface and opening the gate toward yourself, decide if the hinges should be on the left or right. You choose this in the configurator.
Symmetrical Sections
Enter the edge-to-edge dimensions of your space. Our configurator automatically adjusts section widths so the lengths are symmetrical on both sides. We tailor the system to your space – not the other way around.
Selectable Railing Height
Choose your railing height in the configurator: 800 to 1100 mm (measured from floor to top of railing). Per UK guidelines, a 1100 mm height is recommended for falls exceeding 600 mm. The gate is not subject to these standards.
Millimetre Precision
When entering your measurements, we require accuracy down to the millimetre. We create your railing with millimetre precision to ensure it fits exactly where you intend to place it.
Everything Included
Your delivery includes all necessary parts: posts, top rails, screws, drill bits, and special tools. With only a screwdriver, adjustable wrench, tape measure, and spirit level, you’re ready to install.
Step-by-Step Guides
Your order includes personalised assembly videos and written instructions. These are tailored to your specific configuration – not generic guides.
Surface Mounting
Anchored with 4 screws vertically into the surface.
Side Mounting
Anchored with 2 screws horizontally into the side surface.
Selectable Mounting Heights
If choosing surface mounting, you also have the option to select the mounting height. You can let the post extend down 350 mm, 250 mm, 195 mm, or 145 mm. A greater dimension is preferable if possible. The mounting height may affect the number of sections per side.
Screws for Wood Fastening
If you opt for fastening into wooden surfaces, screws for this purpose are included. The screws are made of hardened steel and, in outdoor environments, are treated with Corrseal – Corrosivity Class C4. The screw is equipped with a milling groove along the shaft and one at the tip. This results in a very low insertion torque in harder wood materials and minimizes cracking.
Screws for Concrete Fastening
If you choose fastening into concrete surfaces, screws for this purpose are included. The screws are made of hardened steel and, in outdoor environments, are treated with Corrseal – Corrosivity Class C4. Approved for base materials such as cracked concrete, non-cracked concrete, and perforated steel decking. Also suitable for solid brick, hollow brick, solid Mexican tile, and natural stone. For fastening into materials other than wood or concrete, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.
Top Rail with or without Wall Mounting
If the railing originates from a wall, you can choose to also fasten the top rail to the wall. This can provide a slightly more stable construction.
Aluminium Parts
Posts or other aluminium components require minimal maintenance. If stains occur, usually a mild cleaning detergent, water, and a soft cloth are sufficient.
Do not use products with abrasive properties, acids, or alkaline substances.
Wooden Top Rail
For outdoor installations, we recommend cleaning the top rail and then sanding it lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. Treat the top rail with a penetrating product such as wood oil, based on prevailing conditions. For indoor installation, cleaning and light sanding are sufficient. You may choose to apply wood oil or similar treatment if desired.
When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice!
Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height
Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height
Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m
Public areas: 1.5 kN/m
Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m
Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.
CLASS A
A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.
CLASS B
Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.
CLASS C
C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.
A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.
CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT
In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
GATE
The balustrade will be classified according to its specifications, but the gate itself is not covered by this classification.
