How to install a frameless glass balustrade system

Installing Alu Modern is straightforward – even for DIY beginners. The kit arrives with all necessary parts, pre-cut to your specifications, including fittings, screws and glass panels.

  1. Mark out and drill the mounting points.
  2. Fix the posts using supplied anchors.
  3. Insert and secure each glass panel.
  4. Finish with top rail (optional) and check alignment

Laminated safety glass for balustrades – safe & durable outdoor

Every Alu Modern railing comes with 8.76 mm laminated safety glass as standard – two toughened panes bonded with a PVB film. Even if one layer breaks, the glass remains intact and safe. For added strength in exposed areas (like balconies at height or coastal properties), toughened laminated glass is available on request. The aluminium posts are powder-coated and fully rust-resistant, making Alu Modern ideal for long-term use outdoors.

Fully CE marked – EN 1090 certified for UK safety

Alu Modern is CE marked in accordance with the European standard EN 1090-1:2009 + A1:2011, ensuring high-quality production and safe structural performance.     Technical details

    Square 50×50 mm

    Square aluminium posts and handrails with dimensions 50×50 mm.

    Surface Layer 20 µm

    Our aluminium products are anodised. It’s the same principle as on the mast of a sailboat, which is wind and weather resistant.

    CE-Marked Posts

    The posts have been tested for top-down and lateral attachment to wooden base, and can withstand loads of 0.5-1.0 kN/m.

    8.76 mm Laminated Glass

    Two 4 millimetre glass panes with a plastic film between them. If the glass breaks, the plastic film ensures it stays together as one part. Comes with ground and polished edges.

    8.76 mm Toughened Laminated Glass

    Same construction as our standard laminated glass, but with two tempered glass panes instead of one. We recommend this glass for environments in which the barrier may be exposed to repeated external stress. Comes with ground and polished edges.

    Glass Options (colour)

    When designing your barrier, you can also choose the type of glass. You can choose between clear glass or colored lamellae in gray or opal (coloured or frosted foil between the glass panes).

    Glass Strip in Aluminium

    U-shaped aluminum profile (14×12 mm) was attached on top of the glass with glue. Surface layer 20 µ.

    Symmetrical Sections

    When entering your measurements into our configurator, always enter the outside measurements of the spot in which you wish to place your railing. Our configurator will then make the necessary adjustments. We then adjust the section measurements so that each section on each respective side is the same length. So we adapt your railing to your measurements, not the other way around.

    Customisable Railing Height

    In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing

    Millimetre Perfect

    When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

    Everything is Included with Your Order

    The package you receive from us includes everything you need to assemble your barriers. This includes posts, glass and handrails, as well as all screws, drill bits and special tools. All you need is a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

    Attachment on Top

    The foot is anchored with 4 screws in the floor.

    Lateral Fixtation

    The post is anchored with two screws on the side, directly against the anchoring surface.

    Customisable Attachment Heights

    If you choose lateral attachment, you can also choose the attachment height. You can let the post extend down by 350 mm, 250 mm, 195 mm or 145 mm. Generally, the larger the size, the better. Attachment height may affect the number of sections per side.

    Screw for Wood Attachment

    If you choose attachment to a wooden substrate, screws are included for this purpose. The screw is made of hardened steel with CorrSeal surface treatment for outdoor environments. The screw is equipped with a milling groove along the stem and one on the tip. This means a very low screw-in torque in harder wooden materials and minimizes cracking.

    Screw for Concrete Attachment

    If you choose attachment to a concrete substrate, screws are included for this purpose. The screw is made of hardened steel with Corrseal treatment for outdoor environments – Corrosivity class C4. Approved for basic materials: Cracked concrete – Uncracked concrete – Hole-covered decks. Also suitable for: Solid brick – Hollow brick – Solid mexite brick – Natural stone.

    Aluminium Parts

    Poles or other aluminium parts require occasional maintenance. Should stains appear, a mild detergent, water and a soft cloth are usually sufficient. Do not use products with abrasive, acidic or alkaline properties.

    Glass

    Use a soft cloth to clean glass surfaces with window or mirror cleaning fluid. For more difficult stains, rubbing alcohol can be used. Afterwards, clean with window and mirror cleaning fluid for a second time. Do not use abrasive agents on glass.

    When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

    CLASS A

    A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

    CLASS B

    Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

    CLASS C

    C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.
